Friday 8th February was a special fun-filled day at Start-Rite Schools as we opened our doors to parents, pupils and visitors to explore exciting, hands-on activities related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics known as STEAM. The day started with a red carpet as parents, visitors and students waited for the official opening of the Start-Rite Schools STEAM Fest 2019. The audience was wowed with an introduction and presentations by the students on how STEAM-centred learning works for the five areas of STEAM.
The Principal, Mr. Philip Reynolds, gave a presentation on how Art and Science in times past have often been used to understand and describe the world around us which linked to the present day. We also had a presentation by the CEO, Chanja Datti, Olufunto Boroffice, about developments in Abuja with recycling and their new incentive of 'cash for waste scheme' which was being rolled out in the Capital City.
The Robotics and Coding Club kids wooed the audience by building and programming a working robot which they demonstrated to the delight of the audience. Using dance as a form of Art, the African Dance and Drama Club depicted the differences between traditional learning and STEAM-centred learning. Thereafter, parents and guests were invited to experience STEAM-centred learning through class-based exhibitions and activities.
STEAM Fest 2019 was organised to allow students, parents, and teachers the opportunity to see and engage in making activities across multiple categories:
Think, Design, Create
Sustainability
Arts and crafts
Building and making things
Hands-on Science
Robotics, Electronics, Coding, and Things that Go Beep!
Science in action with oozing, bubbling and electrifying stuff
All classes took part in the STEAM Fest event and undertook different elements. As you will see from the pictures, ideas and creativity were abound. All activities were experiential so visitors were able to touch, interact, test, experiment and in some cases, take home some items. The children were on hand to discuss their projects, the materials used and how they were made. They also discussed lessons learnt and challenges faced in the course of carrying out their respective projects.
As one of the top schools in Abuja, Nigeria, one of our goals at Start-Rite Schools is to equip our students with the skillset for relevance and productivity in the 21st Century. Indeed, STEAM Fest 2019 is one we won't forget in a hurry as it has ignited the curiosity of our students and expanded their minds for more achievements.
