Read Aloud. Change the World. World Read Aloud Day was on February 1, 2019!
Every year, on World Read Aloud Day (WRAD), people all around the globe read aloud together and share stories to advocate for literacy as a human right that belongs to all people.
Start-Rite School partnered with Agrupamento de Escolas Infanta, Portugal for a World Read Aloud Skypeathon where pupils gathered and read out loud to each other. The children from Argrupamento de Escolas Infanta who were aged between 13-15 years and in 9th grade read Secret of the Pyramid by Mary Pope Osbourne and we read to them Love: The Tiger by Frederic-Brremaud. The children also were able to discuss and exchange ideas on culture and customs.
This was seen as an excellent way to support the school's Everyone Reading in Class (ERIC) Programme, where in addition to library sessions each week, all pupils read independently for twenty minutes each day.
Whilst conversation might improve a child's grasp of the spoken language, an enriched vocabulary can only be achieved through consistent exposure to books, newspapers, and magazines. Reading not only sets a child on the pathway to a love of reading and books but also has the added benefit of increasing attention span.
