About Capital Science Academy, Kuje

ABOUT CAPITAL SCIENCE ACADEMY (CSA)
Capital Science Academy is a co-educational boarding school for approximately 900 students from the ages of 10 - 16. We offer the Nigerian Curriculum, as well as an option for those students who qualify to study in addition for GCSE examinations.

Thus we ensure that we open up a range of post-16 pathways for our students, whether those be to schools overseas or to the best opportunities here in Nigeria. Capital Science Academy enjoys a number of close relationships with post-16 providers, and more are being developed all the time.

We have enjoyed considerable continuity of leadership since our foundation and a high level of stability in our teaching staff over the years, and this has enabled the School to grow and develop carefully and in sympathy always with what has gone before. We have quite a number of our Pioneer Staff still with us, and their presence helps us to ensure that our past informs our present and contributes to the way in which we plan for our future.

Our beautiful campus affords us more than enough space to have separate and distinct academic and residential areas, as well as a range of buildings, each serving its own purpose. These are described in more detail under 'Grounds and Facilities'.

WHY CHOOSE CSA?
Over the years since its inception in 2003, Capital Science Academy has established and consolidated its reputation for helping students to obtain excellent academic results which enable them to move on to further and higher education both here in Nigeria and overseas if they wish. Our early Alumni are now well-established and progressing in their careers, whilst later ones are either going through, or have recently finished, their university education. When they come back to see us, as they frequently do, universally they pay tribute to the strong work-ethic which CSA inspired in them and to the way in which the school helped them to find and develop their skills and talents and to grow and mature as individuals.

The confident young professionals who return to visit their alma mater are a delight to meet as well as a tribute and testament to the excellent work of Capital Science Academy.

Curriculum

An important academic goal of Capital Science Academy is to provide a holistic educational experience for our students. Towards this end, we are continuously looking for ways to improve the quality of learning at our school.

The curriculum is centred on the Nigerian requirements of the West African Examination Council; WAEC and the National Examination Council; NECO; enriched with an International curriculum; the Cambridge / Edexcel General Certificate of Secondary Education; IGCSE, JAMB, French DELF, SAT and IELTS.

In addition, our curriculum enriches the students' life through quality pastoral care and mentoring programmes, sporting activities and clubs, as well as providing for their social and spiritual needs.

We endeavour to prepare all our students to have access to the best worldwide educational opportunities in their future tertiary studies and to become global citizens who make a significant contribution to the lives of others.

1. SCHOOL ASSESSMENT
Assessment is an integral part of the teaching process at Capital Science Academy. We ensure students are continuously assessed, to give both ongoing feedback; formative assessment; and to provide a score/grade; summative assessment.

At the end of each week, students have a mini assessment on the subject matter covered during the week. Students are then given feedback and teachers re-teach concepts, as required. Students also have assignments to complete.

There are two major assessments each term; mid-term and end-of-term. All assessments are recorded and they provide a framework for continuous assessment. This allows the school to provide parents with balanced evidence of each child's progress.

2. STUDENT SUPPORT
Students, who are identified in need of extra assistance, join a programme of support after regular classes, for 3 days each week. Support classes have a low teacher to student ratio and are tailored to meet the needs of the individual student. Teachers guide their students through the process of self-assessment and target-setting. Regular reviews take place between the teacher and everyone.

3. EXTERNAL EXAMINATIONS
WAEC / NECO / IGCSE
Because Capital Science Academy is committed to offering our students the best educational opportunities both Nationally and Internationally, we offer all students in the Senior Secondary School the opportunity to prepare and enter for three examinations: WAEC, NECO and / Edexcel IGCSE

IGCSE; International General Certificate for Secondary Education; is the world's most popular international qualification for 14 - 16+ year olds. Based on the best practice in the UK, IGCSE equips students with the specific subject knowledge, as well as with problem solving and critical thinking skills, and the ability to work independently and as a part of a team. The qualification is recognized by universities worldwide.

JAMB Examination
All Students in SS3 are registered by the school, in the JAMB examination; Joint Admissions and Matriculation Boards. This is a Nigeria's unified examination used for acceptance into tertiary level institutions.

SAT / IELTS / French DELF
As access to places in overseas universities is very competitive, at Capital Science Academy we counsel our students and provide courses to prepare them to obtain additional internationally recognized certifications.

SAT - a standardized test for college and university entry, which gives further evidence of a student's capabilities.
IELTS - International English Language Testing System - an English proficiency test
French DELF - The Diplome d'etudes en langue francaise - a Diploma in French Studies.

Features and Amenities

Capital Science Academy enjoys a spacious, secluded campus just under an hour drive from Abuja. We have fifty hectares of land in deep and beautiful countryside, a location which provides the perfect setting for our boys and girls to focus on their academic studies during work time and to let off steam, participate in the extra-curricular programme, or just relax, away from the classrooms, in their 'down time'.

The School has two principal teaching blocks, one each for Junior and Senior Schools, as well as a number of subsidiary teaching areas. There are eight Science laboratories, three ICT suites, a Media Centre, a well-stocked Library which opens seven days a week, and facilities for Home Economics, Art and Music. There is also a very large Examination Hall.

The Girls' and Boys' Hostels are at opposite corners of the campus, each in its own distinct area incorporating additional indoor and outdoor recreational and relaxation space. Security Guards are detailed to each of the five hostel blocks.

In addition to the academic and residential facilities, there is a large Multi-Purpose Hall, which is used for dining, assemblies, visiting speakers and major school events. A fully-equipped Medical Centre staffed by a doctor and a team of five qualified nurses ensures that students can be tested and treated on-site in the event of accident or ill-health. There is a Mosque and also a Chapel, a Laundry and a tranquil Tenth Anniversary Garden. Hydration stations are provided throughout the campus. We also have football pitches, a four-hundred metre running track, tennis and basketball courts and a swimming pool.

There are also four Coaster buses, two 12-seater minibuses and an emergency ambulance.

EVENTS/ACTIVITIES
In order to provide a balanced life for students during their stay in CSA, we employ the holistic approach by making sure there is a variety of activities to complement the academics. The activities are fashioned with the aim of promoting team work, self-reliance, creativity, communal living and unity in diversity among the students. Students take responsibility for most of the events from the planning to execution stage.

The activities are categorized into:
Weekly Events - weekend social events, clubs and societies, MSS and FCS, hostel Inspection.
Yearly Events - inter-house Sport, STEAM Fair, All Around the World, Cultural Day, Self-cook, SS2 Leadership Training, Fun Fair, Inter school debate.

THE SENIOR SCHOOL
In the Senior School, we believe in developing 21st century leaders by providing a well-balanced education. These students meet periodically with senior academic staff, to discuss and devise strategies to help such students to achieve at the highest level possible in their subjects.
