About Green Oak International School, Port Harcourt.

Greenoak International School Port Harcourt is an International Day and Boarding School. GIS has a total population of over 630 highly motivated students. Greenoak admits children aged 5 years to 16 years from various corners of the globe. The school operates a hybrid curriculum consisting of the innovative International Primary Curriculum (IPC), British/American Curricula and the Nigerian curriculum. This provides a balanced education aimed at producing truly intelligent, skilful, motivated, confident and morally sound children.

GIS Primary was founded in September 2004 while GIS Secondary was founded in 2008 by two experienced educationists whose children all studied abroad. Their vision was fueled by a desire to create a world class international school. GIS accepts children of all beliefs with decent values.

The Managing Director co-ordinates the affairs of GIS. The Principal is charge of the day-to-day running of the schools. The Head of Administration and the Academic head are empowered to run their respective areas of duties while an Advisory Committee provides support and ideas to aid GIS’s progress. The Board of GIS formulates policies for the well-being of the school. Currently, 25% of the children in GIS are expatriates while the remaining 75% are Nigerians.

Our Mission Statement

Admission Requirements

Entrance procedures for GIS admissions
A school Introductory Profile and other details can be obtained from the school office. The Admissions Procedure Form costs 20,000 Naira and entitles the person purchasing the form to nominate their child to sit the entrance examination for the academic year of their choice.

If the child passes the entrance examination, then he/she is made an offer into the grade for which the admission is sought. The payment of textbooks and consumable materials fees guarantees the offer. All admissions are subject to availability of space. Admission is open to every successful candidate irrespective of their national, ethnic or religious background. Class size is kept small to ensure pupils receive individual attention necessary for a good and well-rounded education.

Coronavirus Pandemic – A Letter to the Parents of GIS

Description: My dear parents of Greenoak International School (GIS),

I wish to use this medium to bring to your notice a matter of importance in this very unusual time in the history of the world.
Currently, due to the ravaging coronavirus pandemic, many of our parents may be working from home.
This situation is made more challenging by the presence of very young children who are forced to be home.‎
To ease this unwelcome challenge, GIS has put certain measures in place to ease the burden of parents and help our students.

Our dedicated teachers will provide both live online lessons to a whole class and when necessary to individual students.
The infrastructure for this mode of teaching and learning is available in GIS.
The student‘s work will be marked by the respective teachers.

Our students will observe the Easter break as per our adjusted academic calendar.
The online whole class lessons by our dedicated teachers will recommence after our Easter break.

I hope you were able to read my article ‘FAMILY INTERACTION IN A DIGITAL WORLD’.
in our online end of term Newsletter, (Secondary Campus).
I mentioned the report from the January 20th 2010 Survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation, Washington DC.
This survey reported that some Generation M2, children (children age 8 to 18 years) spend an average of 7 and a half hours to 10 hours a day on media entertainment.
In order to avoid such a waste of time, GIS will ensure our students are meaningfully engaged with their school work.
Children learn fast and forget fast too.
This is why we must engage them with our online teaching.

Finally, I humbly plead with our parents to cooperate with GIS during this unusual time.
Please help to ensure that our online teaching and learning is taken seriously by our students in each home.
With God on our side, Nigeria and indeed the world will defeat the coronavirus and hopefully, our lives will return to normal.

Thanks to all our parents and their families for your usual cooperation.

May God protect us all.
Lady Roseline Efolomo John, MD, CEO. More Details

Curriculum

GIS PRIMARY SCHOOL

Greenoak International School (GIS) Primary uses a hybrid Curriculum which comprises:

British Curriculum,
International Primary Curriculum(IPC) and
Nigerian Curriculum
Cambridge Primary Programme
British Curriculum

The British Curriculum provides a curriculum framework to develop the following skills:

English Language
Mathematics
Science skills
The ARTS, Social Sciences, Life Skills
The IPC also provides guidance for:

Curriculum development
Classroom teaching
Learning
This curriculum framework prepares students for the Cambridge Primary
Checkpoint Examinations in Grade Six which is the foundation for
Secondary Education.

IPC

This curriculum has been developed to provide support to teachers and
enhance their teaching skills so that the following goals can be
achieved:

To help children learn the subject knowledge, skills and
understandings they need to become aware of the world around
them
To help children develop the personal skills they need to take an active part in the world throughout their lives
To help children develop an international mindset alongside awareness of their own nationality
To do each of these in ways which take into account up – to – date
research into how children learn and how they can be encouraged to be
lifelong learners
The themes of the IPC can be applied to all subjects such as
Science, Art, Technology, Information and Communication Technology,
Mathematics, Social Studies and the like
Nigerian Curriculum

The Nigerian Curriculum provides GIS students with knowledge and
skills about our host country while also preparing students to be
adequately equipped for their secondary education. Students that have
been introduced to the curriculum in their primary education are better
placed and prepared for the West African Examination Council when they
get to secondary level.

GIS SECONDARY SCHOOL

Greenoak International School (GIS) operates a hybrid curriculum,
comprising Cambridge syllabus, Nigeria National Curriculum and the
American Curriculum. In order to effectively and judiciously cover the
requirements of this comprehensive hybrid curriculum, we cannot follow
the terminal policy of schools which implement a single national
curriculum. There is wisdom in equipping our students with a
comprehensive hybrid curriculum, such as ours, which will enable our
students to get admission into Cambridge “A” level program, (Age 16 – 18
years), Nigeria –Pre-degree programme (Age 16 – 18 years) and the
American SAT Examination.

In summary, to ensure our students obtain good scores and maturity in
their Secondary School external examinations namely, IGCSE, SAT,
WASSCE, A/LEVEL, Greenoak International School will register and present
our students for the listed examinations in Grade 12, as it is in good
practice schools who operate more than a single curriculum.

Features and Amenities

GIS Campuses are situated on an adequate area of land in the GRA environment of Port Harcourt. There are well-furnished male and female hostels, classrooms, laboratories, outdoor farms and a fish pond. Other facilities include a multi-purpose hall, libraries, a musical orchestra, an impressive Home Economics studio, Science laboratories, Zoological pond, Sports ground, an Infirmary, an Arts and Crafts studio and an ICT suite.

Boarding program

The mission of GIS‘s boarding program are as follows:

To instill strong and healthy life skills amongst all students
To provide a positive residential life
To enable students to recognize positive choices and to make wise and informed decisions
To enable students to become motivated life-long learners
To promote discipline as a virtue
It is the vision of the school to see that each graduating student leaves
our program as a confident, competent young adult who enters a global
society as a productive and contributing member.

The students are supervised by resident experienced faculty members
who are their housemasters and housemistress. The scheme is organized
into four houses- Joseph House, Thomas House, Rose House and Mary House.
The house system is a means of engendering a spirit of cooperation
among the students by organizing and encouraging competition between the
houses on a basis other than age or ability. The system provides
students of more general ability with an opportunity to make a
contribution to school life and be acknowledged for doing so.

Each student is allocated to one of the four houses – ideally the
same house as his/her previous sibling – but otherwise on a random
basis, so that the numbers and abilities in each of the Houses are about
the same.
School Canteen
The school canteen is located in the secondary school campus. Boarders and day students have their meals provided by the school and the cost is paid together with the tuition fee. The faculty may also buy meal vouchers and eat in the canteen at subsidized cost. The students’ meal preferences are reflected in the school canteen menu.
